Wilhelmenia Fernandez is a native of Philadelphia and began her vocal training there in high school, continued on to the Philadelphia Academy of Vocal Arts and then to a full scholarship at the Julliard School of Music in New York. She made her operatic debut in the Houston Grand Opera production of “Porgy and Bess” and toured both the United States and Europe performing the title role. She has since appeared in opera around the world. She debuted with the New York City Opera (1982) and with the Paris Opera (1980) in both occassions in the role of Musetta in Puccini’s “La Boheme”. Other notable performances include: “La Vide Breve” at Teatro la Fenice in Venice, Italy, “Aida” at the Wiesbaden Festival, “Simon Boccanegra” with Opera de Nice, as well as, performances with the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Houston Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Ms. Fernandez is familiar to thousands of people around the world who have never been to an opera but were captivated by her performance and singing in the title role of the award winning film “DIVA”
